band of brothers
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
the product itself is excellent. Was advertised as like BRAND NEW., but when received, the collector tin was dented in one corner, and the cd's were covered in fingerprints. This was to be a gift, and I was not happy.

The Pacific
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I loved the Pacific. I found the action scenes remarkably believable and startling in their realism. Several of these scenes take place at night, which must have been very difficult to film. And yet what touched me the most was the incredible acting done by an ensemble cast of little known actors. The raw emotions our soldiers went through during and after the war were allowed to be showcased. The 10-Part Series had different directors for many of the Episodes. During Episode 3, which takes place in Melbourne, Australia, we are finally allowed to get close to several of the men. That Episode was like a movie within a movie. The direction was first rate, and the acting memorable. I found myself so involved with each episode, that the time flew by. And after just seeing the last installment, I was left hungry for more!

One thing that should be mentioned is that the three main characters of the mini series DID actually exist (in fact, several of the main characters were based on real soldiers). Two of them wrote excellent books on their experiences fighting in the war (available through Amazon). The third soldier won the Medal of Honor during fighting at Guadalcanal. He was ordered back to the States to help sell war bonds. Gradually, he felt so restless and guilty, he demanded to re-enlist, and be allowed to fight. He ended up fighting at Iwo Jima, and I'll leave it at that.

War is hell no matter where it is fought. But out in the far reaches of the Pacific during World War II, our soldiers went through something that they could not begin to describe adequately. And when they returned victorious from the Pacific, it was anticlimactic for most of the country.

My father was in the Army Air Force during the war, and was based in the Pacific. After the war, he stayed on in occupied Japan. He shared a lifetime of stories with me before he passed away 20 years ago. I wish he could have lived long enough to see this mini series. I would have to say that this project comes as close to perfect as I've ever seen. I can't recommend it highly enough.

HMM..IS THIS ELEMENTARY?
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I must confess, I was not sure what to make of this movie. First, you had Downey Jr. stepping into the role of the iconic sluth and second, well you had Downey Jr. stepping into the role of Sherlock Holmes. On some levels it works, I mean let's face it, Downey is fun to watch and he has that quirky quality one must have to play the singular Holmes. The real problem with this movie was not Downey, he was game as always, but the screenplay, I mean, the MASON'S AGAIN?! I also found it hard to understand some of the dialogue, Downey spoke quickly and with his mock English accent, I had to hit the subtitle on the DVD menu. This being a convaluted mystery, it was most important to understand, what was being said. The story itself is interesting on some level, but no exactly original, frankly, at times I thought i was watching The League of Distinguished Gentlemen (for the record, not a movie I care see again). The villian is well played and, to be honest, I wish I had seen a bit more of him. Oh yes, don't let me forget Law, he was actually quite good as Watson, and I liked his banter with Downey Jr. Overall, not a bad movie, Downey has potential as Sherlock, let's just hope in the sequel, he gets a screenwriter that can keep up with him.

Great series, if you stick it out to the end
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I've read many of the reviews here and agree with some of the sentiments on both the pros and cons of the series. However, I think the real payoff on this series is toward the end, and you need the patience to stick through some episodes which does to meander a bit. 'The Pacific' chooses to focus more on the human cost of the war than the 'Band of Brothers' series and perhaps because of that, some viewers may find it harder to watch some episodes, and others might find it lacks the stand-alone entertainment value that 'Band of Brothers' so skillfully delivered. Ultimately it's the film-maker's challenge to balance the grueling realism of fighting marines in a difficult environment and making it entertaining for the masses, and I think it achieves that goal, though in a way different from 'Band of Brothers.'

Stunning production presented with great respect for humanity.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is one of the best miniseries I have ever seen and experienced...you don't just see this film you take it in and experience each moment as it happens. I think it is now my alltime favorite war film. I can't see one thing I would have changed about this fine film. The performances were totally engrossing and the intense and varied action was so engaging; also suspenseful. One truly felt the chaois present in a battle and the subsequent 'thoughtful' moments were just stunning...they stopped me in dead my tracks and I still think and ponder on those profound and poignant moments in the film. Attention to detail was wonderful. Some key moments I don't want to reveal here, because I think this would spoil the film for others. I borrowed this fine set from a friend and so far, within a two month period, I have watched the entire production (including extras) three times. I could easily watch it again many times over. Everytime I watched it, I felt more involved and more understanding and appreciative of the individual men who fought, against all odds, for our freedom. I was totally engaged with the characters and got to know them even better than my first viewing, by my third. I am eternally grateful to all of these brave men, ones that lived to tell the story and ones who died in battle. Survivors suffered much and they had great fortitude. I would like to thank them all personally...everyone one of them were heros! Richard Winters, in real life, was much too modest, (in the documentary) when he said he was not a hero, to his grandson, but rather he served with a company of heros. He was exempletory in his leadership skills; he cared about his men and he no doubt, saved countless lives by his wise judgement. Damien Lewis did a fine job playing Dick Winters. The entire cast was well chosen and very believable as the characters they portrayed; all performances were extraordinary. I can't say enough about this film. It is well worth owning. The set is beautiful and very well done. It's well worth the investment. Beautiful score as well. I heard the lyrics to the main theme recently and they are wonderful as well....very uplifting. I am considering buying the score.

Jealous I could not enjoy this movie
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I am not bashing this movie for the fun of it or to stir up conversation. Honestly, I am a bit jealous of those of you who enjoyed the movie, I really wanted to like it. For a younger audience or a casual movie watcher I can see how you might enjoy the atmosphere of film combined with Denzel's usual, calm to the point of being scary, demeanor. On the other hand, I was told by others that this is a must see. It's not. The problem with this film is that it has all been done so much before that even good execution of the movie would not work in my opinion. Nothing about this movie is new; and Hollywood, can we finally give up on the motor cycle gangs in a post-apocalyptic world routine. Also, the "surprise / twist" is not shocking or enlightening at all. If a viewer does not figure it out in the first act, he and Eli have a lot in common.

*If you do not watch movies frequently or you are dying to watch another dystopian / post-apocalyptic film because you love the genre you will likely enjoy this film. I was hoping for something better with this project and with the exception of the opening hunting sequence, the movie was boring and predictable.

Band Of Brothers Blu Ray attention to detail
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have been waiting and waiting until I finally broke down and brought this excellent production. It was well worth the wait, I am not a fan of war movies but I saw Saving Private Ryan it was excellent work and it was the only reason I was interested in this production. This collection is the way to go.
